"Treasures ASD Program – Effective, Specialised Swim Lessons for Children with Autism"
Children with autism are often drawn to water, but can struggle to participate in mainstream swimming lessons due to difficulties with attention and concentration, sensory processing dysfunction, and social and communication difficulties. After discovering that there were no autism specific swim classes for children in Brisbane, Julia Ham (Director, Hampton Swim School) and Nicole Grant (Director, Gateway Therapies) developed the Treasures Swim Program for Children with autism. The program combines the expertise of Julia as a swim instructor, and Nicole as an Occupational Therapist specialising in children with autism spectrum disorders. The Program commenced in 2015 and remains the only program of its kind in Australia.
Julia and Nicole will reveal how they modified mainstream swimming lessons to accommodate children with special needs. We will discuss the preparation that went into developing the program (including collaborating with key stakeholders, running a pilot, reviewing the research, and training for program facilitators). They will share with you some of the challenges and other learning opportunities we have encountered along the way, and also provide some examples of the success they have enjoyed since the program was launched. www.hamptonswimschool.com.au www.gatewaytherapies.com.au
